Migrating Servers
This page outlines the steps to migrate an Ignition Gateway from one server to another. A common use case for this would be if you are upgrading server hardware running Ignition in order to increase performance of the Ignition Gateway by providing additional server hardware resources. If you are instead interested in scaling out your Ignition functionality into multiple Ignition servers, please refer to our Scale Out Architecture Guide.
The general process steps are:
- Collect a Gateway backup of the current Ignition server.
- Install the same version of Ignition from your current server to your new server to restore the Gateway backup.
- Unactivate the license key on the old server.
- Activate the license key on the new server.
These steps are further detailed in the sections below, starting with the collecting and restoring your Gateway backup before transferring your license.
Gateway Backup Restore
Complete the following steps to get a copy of your Ignition Gateway onto the new server:
- Take a Gateway backup from the current server.
- Download and install the exact same version of Ignition running on the current server onto the new server. Use the version archive on our website to find your download.
- Restore the Gateway backup on the new server. See the Gateway Restore procedure on the Gateway Backup and Restore page for more details.
License Activation
Once your Ignition Gateway backup is loaded on the new server, you can migrate the license activation over.
- Unactivate the license key for your Ignition Gateway on the old server.
- Now, on the new server, you can Activate the license key again.
If you run into any issue with migrating the license, you will end up in Emergency Activation Mode and will need to contact your Sales Representative for assistance.
